A great gift that arrives on December 28 is still a great gift. It just isn't the moment you planned.
The good news: a few dates and one simple sum tell you exactly when to order. Here they are.
The Postal Service's 2026 dates
If you are mailing a package yourself within the lower 48 states, the Postal Service recommends sending by these dates for delivery before December 25:
- USPS Ground Advantage: Thursday, December 17
- First-Class Mail (cards and letters): Thursday, December 17
- Priority Mail: Friday, December 18
- Priority Mail Express: Saturday, December 19
Sending to Alaska or Hawaii? Ground Advantage moves up a day, to Wednesday, December 16. The other dates stay the same.
FedEx's 2026 dates
FedEx lists the last days to ship for delivery by Thursday, December 24:
- FedEx Ground and Home Delivery: depends on how far the package travels. Thursday, December 17 for a 5-day trip, Friday, December 18 for 4 days, Monday, December 21 for 3 days, Tuesday, December 22 for 2 days, and Wednesday, December 23 for 1 day.
- FedEx Ground Economy: Tuesday, December 15
- FedEx Express Saver: Monday, December 21
- FedEx 2Day: Tuesday, December 22
- FedEx Overnight services: Wednesday, December 23
Not sure how many days your package needs? FedEx's ground transit map on fedex.com shows it by ZIP code.
Christmas falls on a Friday this year, so those last few days before it get busy. Mailing a week earlier than the deadline takes the worry out of it.
Ordering online? The store's clock matters more
When you order a gift from an online store, the carrier's deadline is only half the story. Two other things come first:
- Processing time. Many stores take one to three business days to pack an order before it ships.
- The store's own delivery window. Most stores list it on their shipping page, such as "5 to 7 business days."
Some smaller stores quote a range like 7 to 14 business days, and say it can stretch to two or three weeks at peak season. That is worth knowing in November, not in December.
Work out your own order-by date in one minute
Use the slow end of the store's window, never the fast end.
- Pick the day you want the gift in hand. We suggest Wednesday, December 23, two days before Christmas.
- Add the store's processing time to the slow end of its delivery window.
- Count back that many business days, skipping weekends.
Example: a store packs in up to 2 business days and delivers in 5 to 7 business days. That is 9 business days. Counting back from Wednesday, December 23, your order-by date is Thursday, December 10.
At peak season: if a store says delivery can take up to three weeks, count back 15 business days. That puts your order-by date at Wednesday, December 2.
Five habits that save the holiday
- Read the shipping page before you buy, not after. It is usually linked at the bottom of the store's site.
- Check whether the store offers gift wrap or a gift message, and whether it can ship straight to the person you are buying for. It saves you a trip to the post office.
- Ask for a gift receipt so the recipient can exchange it without showing the price.
- Look up the holiday return window. Many stores extend returns for gifts bought in November and December. Others do not, so it is worth a look.
- Order the hard-to-find gifts first. Popular items sell out in December even when shipping would still be on time.
